Come Cook & Tour with Me in Rome, Italy!
October 11-17, 2011
We’re going to live and cook like Romans!
Rome! Known for its 2,000-year-old history, its monuments & fountains, its people, its beauty, its character, and its cuisine.
I’ve booked a charming apartment right in the middle of Rome’s Historic Center near Piazza Navona. I’ve picked out a selection of lovely places for you to stay nearby.
We’ll shop at the outdoor food markets including the famed Campo dei Fiori and Piazza Cosimato, and the small food shops where we’ll buy bread from the panetteria, meat from the macelleria, fruit from the fruttivendolo. We’ll shop in Roman supermarkets where you’ll have more fun wandering the aisles than a kid in a toy store. We’ll sample local cheeses, salumi, pastas, and more.
The local ingredients will call out to be cooked, and we’ll be lucky because we’ll have a kitchen. We’ll bring the bounty home and cook lunches at my apartment inspired by purchases and the cooking of Rome!
We’ll also tour Rome’s best of best places: Piazza Navona, Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, Spanish Steps, Capitoline Hill, Coliseum, St. Peter’s, Teatro Marcellus, Bocca di Verita, and more, plus great neighborhoods for shopping: boutiques, flea markets, department stores. We’ll visit Rome’s famous Trastevere neighborhood (where I lived many moons ago), and the Jewish “ghetto” (not a ghetto at all!) for the classic dish carciofi giudea (deep fried whole artichokes).
My best friend, Malena, lives in Rome. She’ll hook us up with a local sommelier for a wine tasting, and demonstrate her own specialty dishes. We’ll go to the locals’ favorite trattorias, cafes, pizzerias, and restaurants.
Embrace the Eternal City and its delicious food – it will all be yours!!

Tuesday, October 11th– arrival in Rome. We’ll meet for a getting-to-know-your-neighborhood walk, take a coffee or a gelato, and dine that evening at a local trattoria of typical Roman cuisine.
Wednesday, October 12th through Sunday, October 16th
We’ll let the spirit of Rome guide us for five days: we’ll shop and cook and tour and dine and taste to the beat of the city’s exuberant spirit and pace. On Sunday night we’ll be sure to enjoy a farewell pizza dinner at Malena’s favorite pizzeria. Sunday is pizza night in Rome!
Monday, October 17th – departure – we won’t want to leave (crying about leaving is allowed–I do it every time!)
